Yesterday I embarked on a major cleaning out of the rooms adjacent to my Studio -- the flat files room, and the "business office" -- and under a mountain of boxes I found a small box containing xeroxes of pencils from books like AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (my last time there), LOST GENERATION, HIDDEN YEARS, AMAZON, even TRUE BRIT. About 40 books all told, some 800+ pages. These are reduced copies, about the size of the printed books.

My first instinct, of course, was to throw them out, since they are of no further use to me -- but then I had an idea. Why not put them to practical use?

So! A "contest". Today is May 14th. By this time next month, June 14th, whoever can show proof of having made the largest donation to charity wins the whole box.

Your Charity choices are the American Red Cross, the ALS Foundation, the American Cancer Society, and the Humane Society of the United States. Plenty of other worthy causes, of course, but those are my personal top four, so please pick from them. You will, of course, be able to write off the donation on your taxes.

Go to it, peoples! May the most generous among you win!

Now, how long will it take for someone to spin a Big Bad Byrne story out of it?

"Byrne won't let me donate to the NRA to win the contest."

Bill, that is EXACTLY why I named the charities to choose from!

I don't think the NRA qualifies as a "charity", of course, but I am quite sure that would not have stopped some smartass from trying!

If the xeroxes don't have at least one official John Byrne coffee stain on them, no deal!

••

That would have to be staged, since I don't drink coffee at home!

Fantastic idea, JB - worthy causes indeed.

Pencils from those runs are very, very cool.  Excellent art and always a treat to see the pencils.

I should mention there is quite a range of penciling here, from breakdowns to full pencils, and even what Roger Stern dubbed my "flakedowns" -- something halfway between breakdowns and full. That's what I was doing on HIDDEN YEARS, for instance.
