In a few months - June 3rd, to be precise -- I will celebrate my 25th anniversary as an American citizen. I've lived in the USandA for more than half my life, now, quite a bit longer than I lived in Canada.

Yet, for some reason, I still see myself identified as Canadian-American. I've actually given up correcting the Wikipedia entry. That will apparently stand forever as just one more example of why "facts" are not democratic, and Wikipedia cannot be trusted.

This morning I received an invitation -- not the first -- to participate in a project featuring "contemporary Canadian artists". Flattered, but I declined, as I would if invited to be presented as a "contemporary British artist". I'm a Damn Yankee. No dual citizenship. I got my papers!

I wonder how long it will be, if ever, before I am no longer identified as Canadian, eh?

Damn

Hopefully soon, sir.

I can't understand why you'd still be referred to as a Canadian after so long in the US. Whenever I've mentioned your work to anyone, I've always referred to you as "American comic writer/artist John Byrne".

I'm surrounded by 5 different versions of Guardian right now.  I feel more Canadian than American some days.

We breed all the talent here in England, and in my eyes JB will always be an Englishman! When nobody's around, he reverts back to his Brummie accent... honest!!

John is an American. He went through all the work, and jumped through all the hoops to get his papers. That makes him one of us. In many ways I find John is more American than some that are born here. He actually knows how our government is supposed to work, and he gets out there and votes. How many natrual born citizens can say the same?
