I was in college when the New Universe was launched, and I tried a few issues
of each title. The whole thing felt C-list at best to me.

I've reread the Shooter issues of Star Brand recently, and they're pretty excellent - certainly, the JRjr art is worth preserving. Since the majority of his work is in the superhero mode, it's nice to see a master visual storyteller have a chance to draw smaller, quieter work.
As part of their aborted (and pretty lousy) New Universe revamp a couple of years back, Marvel put out new one shot issues set in the original NU continuity. The Star Brand one was a lot of fun, but there was a lot of criticism of the original series spoken by one of the characters that rubbed me the wrong way as a fan. Why put out a one shot aimed at a really, REALLY specific subset of my own aging demographic and use it as a platform to slag the original? Odd.

Why put out a one shot aimed at a really, REALLY specific subset of my own aging demographic and use it as a platform to slag the original? •• There is a sizable slice of fandom that seems to like nothing better than seeing the characters "slagged". Helps them deal with their addiction, I think. "See how stupid this stuff is/was? And, of course, I KNOW it's stupid. Surely you didn't think I DIDN'T? I read this stuff just so I can laugh at it. "Now gimme the next issue or I'll kill you!"

At the time, I loved DP7. Thought it was a great book. Didn't like much else out of the New Universe line, but that title really resonated with me for some reason. I've still got them all. Would be interesting to see if they still hold up to the harsh light of the 21st Century coupled with being 25 years older.

I only ever found one issue of DP7 on the shelves (US comics were sporadic over here), but there was enough there to interest me. I did seek out later issues and got a kick out of them. That was a little while ago, I'd wager that because they were solid tales, they might still give me a bit of fun.

Byrne: The saddest part of the effigy burning -- which I "hosted" only in the sense of providing the venue -- is that it was Mark Gruenwald's idea, but he was forced, literally, to leave before the actual event.Mark REALLY needed the catharsis, but after setting everything in motion, he was not there for the thing that would have done him the most good. --- Why was Mark forced to leave?

DP7 had the most heart of any of the titles IMO. Being a huge JRjr fan made me wish that Star Brand was a better book. I remember wanting him back on the X-Men though.

I wonder how many of you are aware that Mark coined the title DP7 as a little "salute" to the DOOM PATROL.

... also very similar to Harbinger. Interasting character dynamics and interactions, as well as pretty well done......... though nothing really new about the New Universe.
