JB, among the X-Men roster and supporting cast, who were your favorite characters to draw?

You know what -- I don't think I'll answer this. Don't want to generate a firestorm of internet postings about which characters I "hate".

I met the X-Men during john's run and like everyone else, I liked Wolverine best.  I didn't really know much about the original X-Men until X-Factor...and still didn't really know them!

The only time I really felt like I loved the X-Men was during X-Men: THY. Angel was always a favourite because I think he's a visually beautiful character.  Blue and furry Beast was one of my favourite Marvel characters until I met John's Hank McCoy.  Beast is a fun and unique charater even without the blue and furry look.

But Havok and Polaris were simply incredible...I think I fell in love with Lorna Dane!  Her costume is so gorgeous!  They both catapulted to the top of my favourite characters list.  I wonder if the Champions would have been more successful with Havok and Polaris rather than Angel and Iceman?

I get you, JB. No prob.

BTW, I just asked because I was thinking this morning about a gorgeous Lilandra commission you did a while ago.

It never made sense to me Xavier would end up launching a full blown school for mutants.  With this angle there's zero point for them to have secret identities.  How boring the X-Men have become.

I don't think so.  Iceman and the Angel had much more name recognition in 1975 than Havok and Polaris.  GIANT SIZED X-MEN #1 had only debuted at the beginning of that year and THE CHAMPIONS made their appearance cover date October '75.  Angel and Iceman had at least been floating around making appearances in other titles during the time UNCANNY was basically a reprint book.  Havok and Polaris?  Not so much.

I really liked CHAMPIONS. It was a unique line up but for me was a ton Of fun. I liked Angel and Iceman as part of the team.

Off topic : The name Lorna Dane always makes me think of Lorna Doone shortbread cookies.

Me too, Emery.  And Sean Cassidy made me think of the 70s teen idol.

Lorna Doone? She`s a Devon U.K. character and shortbread is traditionally Scottish!

Edited to add...We were listening to the radio at work yesterday,on the station we were listenimg to they have a quiz called Time Tunnel, where they play a selection of songs from a particular year and you have to guess that year. They played a David Cassidy song, and i had to explain to my workmate The Partridge Family,i felt old!

The Champions may not have been more successful with Havok and Polaris, but they sure would have been more powerful....and more enjoyable to me.  Havok is one of my faves and his presence (in his classic "black hole" costume) is always a plus in my book.

I enjoy Mr. Byrne's rendition of him as much if not more than Wolverine's.
