The other day I was reading an article about how some athletes have been preparing for the Olympics by drinking things like beet juice to improve their endurance when working out and tart cherry juice to speed recovery time.  Apparently, there are academic studies that seem to support these claims.

Are there any supplements that you take or foods that you eat and swear by?

I don`t really take these ideas seriously, one week the experts are telling you to eat one thing, the next week another expert says it`s bad for you.

The only thing I have done that I'd 'swear by' is bust up the
traditional meal plan from three large meals (breakfast, lunch,
and dinner) into six much smaller ones every three hours
throughout the day.  It took a couple of weeks to get used to,
but I could never go back to three meals a day!

The only 'supplement' I might take is a home-made protein bar
for when I'm on the go and I hit that three-hour mark on an
empty stomach with no other nutritious food options available.

I stay the hell away from all snack foods.

Why did you spread your meals like that?  To lose weight?

No but I read an interesting article recently that the nitrogen in green leafy vegetables helped muscles recover faster and work better (Ie Popeye was right)

I did the 6 meals a day thing for a while. Most recently I have begun intermittent fasting. http://www.leangains.com/
Basically, I eat 3 meals between 1 pm and 9 pm. The rest of the time I fast. It took about a week to get over not eating breakfast but the gains are great. I  am not hungry at all when I get up and I  have clarity of thought that I lose after eating. Weight comes of very easily too. I highly recommend.

2 grams a day of EPA/DHA from fish oil. It's what your body needs. You can get more specific for the amount, but that will take some research.

Vitamin D.  It's the only thing I was found to be deficient in at my last physical.

Glucosamine/chondroitin and fish oil supplements were recommended
to me by an orthopedist a few years back when my knees started to go
bad.

Marc, you might want to look into tart cherry juice.  People say it is great for arthritis.

Separately, pomegranate juice was all the rave a few years ago.  Has anyone here tried taking that regularly?

I don't think there's enough space here for me to list all the supps I take.  LOL.

I have recently gotten into juicing -- frankly, it's the only way I can eat a beet.  I like most greens raw -- spinich and the like -- but can't stand vegetables when they're cooked.  And I mean, even lightly steamed, which releases the nutrients the best.  Can't stand the texture -- or maybe the temperature.  Whatever.  Vegetables... yuck!

So, juicing is a great alternative!  Gets my greens and root vegetables in without me gagging from the texture.

Other than that, I agree with Matt and vitamin D3 -- which isn't really a vitamin, but rather a hormone, but whatever.  I would also recommend Omega 3's (fish oils), zinc and magnesium.  And if you don't get enough B12, supp that, too.

Be proactive and preventative rather than reactive about your health.  Whatever you put in your body today has an effect in the future!

(And it also don't hurt to have your hormone levels checked!)

Also, a quick and easy metabolism booster:

When you wake, before you have anything else -- coffee or anything -- drink a litre of water with a 1/2 lemon squeezed in.  It will bump you up like you wouldn't believe.

Consider: you've been asleep for (hopefully) eight hours, so your body has been deprived of water.  When you wake, you're extremely dehydrated, even if you don't "feel" it.  Putting water in the body hydrates the brain -- watch what happens!
