Being a fan of JB and Charlton Comics in general; I have always enjoyed that series. I loved that title, one of he best comic titles I think. I liked the different camera angles and page layouts that JB used on that series. I noticed that when I first read those comics in the 70's. It was something diffrent to my young comic reading eyes. I still enjoy those comics. Thanks for posting that link.

Funny they should pick that issue. You'll notice the credit for art reads "Byrne Robotics". Very simple reason: I didn't pencil that issue. I inked it, but the pencils were provided (with Charlton's permission) by an Art College crony (since deceased), Doug Bevan. Oddly enough, I no longer remember WHY this was so. Doug was a painfully slow artist, so it certainly couldn't have been to help me out with deadlines! Perhaps he was strapped for cash. Anyway, I redrew a lot of it, including the entire splash page, but a lot of Doug still shows thru.

Wow, that's very interesting. I recall noticing the "Byrne Robotics" credit back in the day, thinking it was amusing. I had no idea as to the true origins of it.
Doomsday +1 (which I was introduced to with the Fantagraphics reprints) was wonderful. I would love to see JB return to that world. Post apocalyptic fiction has fascinated me for as long as I can remember and it's always cool to see JB venture into that realm (and to see all of the wonderful rubble in the fallen cities).

Wasn't that a word that Kurtzman created/used when working for Mad magazine?

JB, when you metioned "Byrne Robotics" it made me think about an interview you did many years ago (The Comic Journal, I think). You mentioned that you had people in your neighborhood help with some art chores. How did that come about? "Hey kid, I'll give you 20 bucks to mow my lawn and another 30 to help me ink this comic." ;-).

This thread reminds to me that I still have to search for the seventh episode.
JB, one question: who does own the series' publication rights, today?
DOOMSDAY +1 never appeared in Italy (I have the six American books, of course) and I wondered if it could be translated here, someday.

A "fetzer" in Yiddish is a farter. I'll have to ask my wife (who grew up around the language) if "veeble" means anything.

"A "fetzer" in Yiddish is a farter."
In German, it's a device or machine, I think. I know very little German, actually, so don't take my word for it. I took German over twenty years ago and didn't do well at it...

You mentioned that you had people in your neighborhood help with some art chores. How did that come about? "Hey kid, I'll give you 20 bucks to mow my lawn and another 30 to help me ink this comic."•• Hardly. There were a handful of issue I did for Charlton on which I used assistants -- principally DOOMSDAY+1 and the single issue of EMERGENCY! -- and they were fellow Art College folk. In two instances I had them spotting blacks and ruling borders and such, so that I could pay them and help them thru some temporary financial shortfalls, and in the third, as noted here, it was when I got Doug to pencil an issue, most likely for the same reason. The fourth instance was less successful, when I got Duffy Vohland to ink an issue during my "transition" to SPACE: 1999. I sent along DOOMSDAY+1 pencils, and Duffy immediately farmed them out to whatever hacks he had around. Charlton was not happy with that issue, and neither was I!
