As the new year approaches, it occurs to me there are some things I'd like to
see -- and most pointedly not see -- from the Condo of Concept.

• No new X-titles

• No recycling of 20 and 30 year old storylines

• No more "writing for the trade", which also means…

• No stories that run more than 3 issues

• No pinup covers

• No fake deaths

• No real deaths

• No breaking of the status quo by the latest flavor of the month
"talent".

Of course, even as late as they are with most of their product, this is
December, so at least the first few months of 2009 are probably in the
drawer. How many of these challenges have already been lost, d'you
suppose?

I'd like to see it, too.  I'd add giving up multibook crossovers and Previews synopsis ads, too.  If they did these things, they'd probably get me back as a reader.

Unrealistic, though.  Sales-wise, they've turned the company around under Quesada's direction.  Can't expect them to turn around when their strategy is working.

I wonder how bad the economy will hit them, though.  Hard to afford a 40+ book story if your disposable income dwindles.

Let's see:  No new X-titles and No more "writing for the trade" for sure.  I just don't think writers nowadays can write a single issue story with no cliffhanger or lead-in to the next issue.  The exceptions being Palmiotti & Gray with Jonah Hex.

Amen. Revisits are for reprints and back issues.

No stories that run more than 3 issues

*****

This alone would get me to at least try some of their books.

I think Marvel and DC oversaturate the market to everyone's detriment.  I think they should cut down to only six or so books a week.

I would be happy if Wolverine wasn't in the Avengers.

• No new X-titles

I still can't get over the bastard's stated reason for cancelling HIDDEN YEARS being "there are too many X-titles and so we have to elminate HIDDEN YEARS to avoid confusion."  Some ten dozen new X-titles later...

• No recycling of 20 and 30 year old storylines

Amen!  If you are going to take credit for writing a story, come up with something original!

• No more "writing for the trade", which also means…

• No stories that run more than 3 issues

I have to disagree with you just a little on this one.  I don't want things written for  a trade all the time, but I don't mind a story taking a while when there is not a lot of useless filler

• No pinup covers

Instead, make them pinup pages!  What a concept!

• No fake deaths  • No real deaths

I have enjoyed your real and fake deaths too much to agree with you. Phoenix.  Guardian.  Sasquatch.  Wonder Woman.  Superman (by Banshee).  Most of the Lab Rats.  Doctor Doom.  Terrax.  Sue and Reed's Daughter.

• No breaking of the status quo by the latest flavor of the month
"talent".

Amen, again!

I agree with no mega-colossal, cross-over events this year.  It's not special when you do it every year.

There is neither the will nor the talent at Marvel as it is currently composed to meet this challenge.
