Personally I wouldn't go back quite that far...for me, at least, the wheels really came off the wagon with "Sin's Past," in '04.

Yeah, that was when the most recent/biggest problems began, but the beginning of JMS' run in 2001 introduced the Spider-Totem stuff, and it began to snowball from there.

I was enjoying JMS's run with JRjr until JRjr left. I was still reading when Sins Past came along and that was it. That story was so awful I never bought another issue. That story was a bad idea, but it was made worse by Quesada's intervention.

Up until The Other, the Spider-Totem stuff could be (and briefly was) easily
handwaved away by saying Ezekiel was lying. Sins Past, the Other, and the
unmasking are not so easily washed away.

SER: Well aside from Peter's foray into domestic battery, the folks in charge during the Clone Saga didn't do anything that was permanently character damaging. That's the key, for me. Bad stories can be ignored. Unfortunately, the mentality of creators these days is to treat every dotted i in ever story as gospel that must be addressed or referenced. It becomes an anchor on the character.
Back in the day, Superman's parents could still be alive somewhere in outer space, Flash could have been given his powers by an imp, and Bruce Wayne could have had an insane older brother, and those stories could be swept under the rug as the products of bad sushi and cheap whiskey.
I almost wept when I saw a comic on the stands that involved Booster Gold going back in time to try to stop the Joker from paralyzing Barbara Gordon (of course he fails because she was *destined* to be paralyzed -- you know, like Bruce Wane was destined to have his back broken permanently and for Jason Todd to remain dead permanently... grrr). I can't believe this 20-year-old story is still being trotted out this way (and with the artist basically redrawing panels from The Killing Joke).

You know, I think I'm just going to go back to the old philosophy I had on reading comics as a teenager. " If I read it and like it, I'll buy it. If I don't like it, I'll find a comic book I do like and spend my money on that . " I'm not saying this in a harsh way, or in any way supporting any comic book company right now. I can't change what Marvel or DC is doing right now. The only way I could, is if I were EIC of one of them. If that is in my career's future, it's a ways off. The only other thing I can do, is try to have the best care I can with the work I'm already doing in comics.
