John asked me to use Spider-Man instead of Spiderman. I am happy to oblige, but I am curious. I know John does not like terms like "Spidey" or "Bats" or "Supes" because he feels that these are disrespectful to the characters, but is his dislike for the term Spiderman the same? I do realize that in the comics, he is referred to as Spider-Man. Thanks all.

Yes, I feel as strongly about Spider-Man as the
others. "Spidey" I can barely tolerate, since Stan
started it, but it has also proven the progenitor of
thlings like "Wolvie" and "Maggie". Blecchh!!

This reminds me of something I noted that relates to another thread from today. Note the spelling Sabre-Tooth!

When people use things like that I almost want to try the same thing on them. Take their name and play around with it. See how they respond. Of course I do a similar thing if people call me by the wrong name. I'll call them whatever wacky name I can think of. I called one guy Ernesto for weeks. His real name was Steve. He learned eventually to use the right name.
Might work in this situation. I just hope I never see anyone try to call Martian Manhunter something like Mart Man. That'd be so sad.

Has anyone else noticed that the pressn when mentioning our Spider-man in any article always and I mean always leave the hyphen out. It drives me mad.

Spelling Spider-Man "Spiderman" is the same thing as spelling
your name "Eric Shappeero" or my name Jo Hollen. Wouldn't it
be strange for someone to put in writing that "Eric Shappeero is
a great guy"? If they think so highly of you, wouldn't they care
to spell your name correctly?

This has always been a no-brainer to me. Unlike Batman or Superman, Spider-Man doesn't look right meshed together. Plus it's spelled that way on the cover of the comic. I grew up reading Spidey Super Stories as a child, so the nickname always worked for me personally.

Spider-Man sometimes calls himself "Spidey," and given his irreverant attitude, it works for him. On the other hand, I can't imagine Batman calling himself "Bats" or "Superman" calling himself "Supes."

Joe, I take your point, but leaving out a hyphen and completely mangling a name are not the same thing. Do you honestly believe that Shappeero and Spiderman are comparable? Has anyone ever asked Stan whether he cares? I'd be very curious to see what he thinks about his beloved Spider-Man being dehyphenated. As far as "Spidey" is concerned, that has always made me wince

JB, what about nicknames like "Web-head" for Spider-man or "Shell-head" for Iron Man. How do you feel about those?
