Mr. B,

Adult coloring books are all the rage in the hipster and high-strung, stressed communities at the moment. Regressive therapy. They're everywhere. My local book shop has two entire shelving units devoted to the swirls of Van Gogh, the lilies of Monet and the paislies of anonymous workhorse artists. All in coloring book form.

I know you don't like when someone waltzes in and colors your black and white works and commissions, but what if you licensed a coloring book of Marvel or DC characters drawn for the very purpose of being colored in by us morons? I know I'd rather color in a battle on the Rainbow Bridge than some twee, hipster ladybugs.

It would appeal to old and young, of course. And your versions of famous characters are considered classic, so it's also attractive to laymen who don't know that, for example, Amadeus Cho is The Hulk now.

The John Byrne Coloring Book. Come on already, just do it.

This reminds me, it's not Byrne, obviously, but I did
find this in a local bookstore:

Marvel is already planning on entering this market this fall.

I got my wife one based on Outlander (she is a huge fan) as well as some high quality colored pencils (thank you again to those who provided input) for Christmas.  At first she was insulted as she had a nemesis at work who was big into them.  Drama aside, and fast forward a couple of months, she has loved it. She is the type that suffers from winter blues, so it was a great activity. Personally, I would love to take a crack at some of JBs creator owned stuff. Even original JB mosters and heroes and so on where I could color as I get engrossed with his work in my own mind, that would be fun!

Truth to tell, I have wanted to try my hand at a coloring book for many years. There's something intriguing about the standard "style," with the open spaces and thick/thin lines.

Unfortunately, at least as far as the Marvel and DC characters go, this is not something I could do on my own, and licensing those characters would probably mean I'd end up doing the work for "free"!!

I'd love to get my kid a John Byrne coloring book. The superhero coloring books I've bought for him so far have been done by far lesser artists.

The irony is delicious. I'd get my John Byrne black and white art... and then I'd be the colorist. WOO HOO! :) :) :)

Mr. Byrne, you have mentioned many times how you loathe those who purchase your art in black and white and then do their own coloring - certainly legitimate and I am minded to agree.

But this would be a  black and white piece that would be INTENDED for colorists to work on! That's all I meant.

That's nothing like irony. Quite the opposite. Irony would be if I did a coloring book and then, mindful of what I'd said about how I dislike it when people color my commission pieces, no one colored the coloring book!

----

Marvel has had Deadpool and Age of Ultron adult coloring books on the
bookstore shelves for a few months now. The pages are just cover art
with the color stripped out, though, and the extent to which they work
as coloring pages varies.
