Wilson: "Were you implying he was mentally unstable?"
Wilson, apparently you weren't reading Captain America at the time. To say US Agent was mentally unstable is an understatement!

I remember seeing the books on the stands, but my preference for the translated Japanese comics then popping up over American superhero comics was keeping me from getting into it. The sting of having seen one crossover too many was still strong then.
Still, I was impressed by John's work on the title. If I wasn't so turned off by the crossovers and having been burned out from the X-Men titles, I'd have picked it up.

I remember how tight, detailed, "modern" the art looked. It put the Avengers on parity with the artwork on the X-books at the time (with folks like Romita Jr., Silvestri, Art Adams and Alan Davis.)

"To this day, I am still bitter (at Marvel) that JB was unable to bring to conclusion the long simmering build-up of the Scarlet Witch saga."
Oh come on. The House of M was a MARVLEOUS conclusion of JB's story.
I kid.

Actually, Steve Jamrozik's post isn't that far off: WCA #42 has a cover date of March 1989, which I believe means it would have been on the stands around Dec. 1988.

I remember two things about the beginning of JB's run on WCA. Seeing a wicked cool image of U.S. Agent hopping a fence, and trying to pick my mouth up after seeing the Vision dissected on a table.

I thought JB's WCA was a combination of really cool stuff and stuff that missed the mark by a bit. But still I think it's at least as good as Englehart's early issues. The Mini series by Stern and Bob Hall was great. In my mind JB was really back at Marvel when he did Namor, which is a complete hit!!

You are off by a few years, JB - it was actually during your WCA run that Marvel shortened the gap between cover date and Direct Market arrival date. Look at some of the covers around #51 - you'll see sequential issues with the same cover date month, even though it was still being published monthly.
WCA#42 arrived in stores November, 1988. Newsstands typically got their issues a month after that.
When I was a kid, cover dates were one of things I used to obsess over!

I've often wondered what JBs plans for US Agent were. I've re-read that run a couple times and US Agent and WW2 Human Torch -- 2 characters I wish I could see JB have 36 more issues to explore.
JB -- was there anything cool planned? Can you spill the beans now - 24+ years on?
:-)

Ha! I didn't know that. I think I stopped buying the series when Mike Zeck left the book.
