Not certain if anyone on here cares about such things, but I saw this mentioned about on another thread here. There was a question, sometime back, as to who coined the term "BYRNE VICTIM"? ( http://www.byrnerobotics.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TI D=22577&PN=0&TPN=6 ) The short answer was that "A fan suggested it, as detailed in "A Flame About This High" in JBNM #28." Well, I was, in fact, that fan who came up with it and innocently mentioned it to JB while at the San Diego Comic Con, waaaaay back in, I think, 1991 or so. It was a funny thing. I remember being a young artist, at the time, and being very excited about getting a chance to meet someone with whom I had admired and looked up to as an artistic mentor and who I, in a lot of ways, felt was almost a sort of father figure. Yes, and like a lot of you, I LOVED John Byrne's work and to have a chance to meet the man in person was an incredible perk. When I approached John he was sitting at a table and signing a few copies of his most recent issue of JBNM. I shamelessly had brought a book for him to sign. A very used and tattered copy of THE UNCANNY X-MEN #143, which, as most of you know, was his last issue on his run of that title, but was also my very first exposure to his art. This was a very sacred book to me, as it was what truly sparked my love for comics and my passion for art. To actually get the artist who was partly responsible for igniting one of my youthful passions and had helped shape an important part of my life path, was a true touchstone moment in my life. When I presented it to John, with it's cover well worn and creased in too many places that anyone short of myself could ever see an intrinsic value in it, his eyes swelled big and he smiled brightly and declared a genuine "Wow!" Adding that "Now this is a book that has been enjoyed!" I blushed a little when he said that it would be an honor to sign that particular book and that it made him feel a bit more proud that day, as the book wasn't in a mylar sleeve and looking like it had never been opened nor read. What a joy it was to see him react in such a way. It was at this point that I shared with him how important that book had been to me, and my formative years as an artist, and that it was my single favorite piece of work that he had done. That it was the one issue that had truly addicted me to being a die hard "BYRNE VICTIM." It was at this single utterance that John froze in the middle of what he was doing, turned to me and, with a look of shear resplendence, repeated it "Byrne Victim??? Oh, I LIKE THAT!"
And the rest is history. :) Now, I may not be the first one to have coined this term. I can't imagine that I was, but betting on John's reaction to me saying it at the time, I am possibly the first to actually say it to him. In a way I take a little pride in knowing that I was able to coin a term that helped define most of the folks on this board, and to whom share a similar enjoyment for John's art.
That's my short story and just doing a bit of sharing about the origin of what seemed like a real no-brianer.
Happy days everyone!
Matt

Something is odd about this - the person who allegedly coined the term makes their first post here to make this claim? Things that make you go "Hmmmmm"

Typo on the UX-MEN issue... thanks!
As to this being my first post, I'm sure that I've posted once or twice on here before, but I have no idea what my user name would have been. It's been a while since I've read any posts here, or posted anything of importance, myself. Suffice to say, the story above is true. JB might recall a few details of it, though I have no idea why he would. I don't usually post on fan forums, nor do I regularly read comic books anymore, but I do, on occasion, meander into a comic shop and search stuff out. I usually look to see what JB has been up to. Mostly I look over his ART PAGE that is on here and drool over the commission work that he has done.
Any ways, and again as stated above, I was just sharing a story that I thought that you all might enjoy reading about.
Best,
Matt

Great story, but, as we all know, Mr. Byrne is always cruel and insulting to his fans. In fact, I was at that convention and I witnessed Mr. Byrne light Matt on fire after refusing to sign his book. True story. Seriously - Cool story, Matt.

HaHaHa!!! Well, why sour this post with the other details on how John complimented me on the near unreadable copy of UX-MEN that I presented to him and then, subsequently, and quite uncontrollably so, ripped into me with due regards to my art. Needless to say, I was unmoved by his remarks. It is like a breath of fresh air to finally meet someone who has inspired you to seek out and pursue a true passion in life. If truly there is a measure for real God given talent, it must be that it is there, hopefully, to inspire others to also find their talents.
Now... what did Byrne say to me that was such an insult? Maybe I should save that for another thread. ;)

You don't show your art to pros if you can't handle criticism. Seeking feedback is kinda the point. JB ripped on my stuff once or twice, but I found it a pleasure to hear what he said (and even draw some lines over a face showing me how bad I'd done.) But I think as JB has said in the past, he hasn't the patience to be an Art teacher, so I'm sure there are people better at offerring feedback. I usually imagine I'd be less critical of someone who's not very good. Say soemthing like: Keep having fun and keep drawing. While with someone who I thought had talent, I'd be more specific about the big things they need to work on. Of course, I never became a professional cartoonist. But I did become an Art Teacher!

Matt, you should consider posting a couple of drawings here or in the sketchbook thread to show JB how much your art has improved over the past 20 years. I would definitely like to see before and after pictures.
