"Old timers" 'round these parts will know that even when a project is still months away, I find myself working on bits and pieces of it, just to clear stuff out of my brain. This past Sunday I was working out some of the early pages for CITIZEN ZERO, and even penciled/laid out a few. Without this turning into a CZ thread, I thought I'd share this page so you can all see what I give myself to ink these days.

Very nice JB. With only one page I already have many questions. Looking forward to this.

I love seeing raw pencils.
It gives non-pros a peek behind the curtain!

Looks great! I am assuming that you are not lettering it since it appears you are doing full pencils.

I love to see pencils layouts. It helps a lot to understand constructions, eventually hesitations. I would like to see the inked page now, to be able to compare and see what was fine-tuned in the process...
Thank you very much.

One of the things to which my old brain has yet to adjust is this idea of inking unlettered pages -- which means penciling pages that will be inked unlettered. Which means I find myself drawing in areas where, in the days of lettering on the boards, I would "cheat", knowing that space would be filled with balloons and captions.I tell myself the "extra" drawing is for the people who will someday buy the original art. If they can't have lettering, they should at least have something in the spaces above character's heads! Even with that, the "finished" pages look wrong. Inked pages without lettering trigger my deadline senses. The only reason such pages used to come thru the offices was that the books were so late they had to be lettered on overlay so the lettering and the inking could be done at the same time.

I am with you on this one. I really miss the lettered pages when seeing the original art. It gives a feeling that it is complete. Of course if it is a sequence without sentences, the whole sequence is drawn in a specific way to emphasize the message supposed to be given.
Does doing non-lettered pages kinda change your mind on the way you draw the scenes. I am not saying about the fact of the empty place left by the speech balloons, but more on emphasizing postures of the characters or exagerating their facial expressions?

Only, as noted, in that I am kind of hyper-aware of what's going to be
covered by balloons and captions.

Neat, JB.
AND--of course, I have a production question.
I've noticed that your IDW jobs (including FX) seem to be on NON-pre-ruled paper.
I was just wondering if the pages, like the CZ posted above, are bleed pages or non-bleed pages...and, if they are NON-bleed pages, what dimensions are you using for your panel boarders? Is 10 by 15 still appropriate? I recall reading sometime ago that 10 by 15 is what the "big two" companies now actually use for BLEED pages.
Thanks,
MPH

Would this be considered pencils? Layouts? Breakdowns? Something in between?
I remember you telling that you used to just sit down and start drawing The Fantastic Four with the cover serving as the plot. Are you still doing that here? Or is there something written out?
