Oddly enough SW 2 did have a few good stories in the crossover issues. In paticular I really enjoyed the Spider-Man golden notebook story. Peter swiped it from the office building the Beyonder turned to gold. But he just can't bring himself to sell it.

One of the best comics I ever read. As a kid I relaized how lucky I was that my parents were involved, unlike Tommy's they cared and always put us first (even though we were "latch key kids." And now that I am a parent, I think not only of how my parents were but frequently when I obsess over work or interests that don't involve my daughter I think of Tommy, and the kind of parent I don't want to be. So thanks to my folks, and thanks to JB.

Johnny appears to look like the teen-ager he is supposed to be.

JB, was the rumored reason why Johnny was replaced by H.E.R.B.I.E. in the 70's cartoon the inpiration (or, at least, one of the inspirations) for the story?••• You mean that the networks were afraid kids would set themselves on fire trying to be like the Torch? Yes. (For those who are not aware, the real reason H.E.R.B.I.E. replaced Johnny was that the Torch was tied up in another licensing deal. One that, like so many Marvel deals, never came to fruition.)

Such a powerful issue. This has to rank near the top of any list of best Fantastic Four stories ever.
I love the way you handle Johnny here, JB. It's nice to see him portrayed as a three-dimensional person capable of a full range of emotions like grief and guilt. His reaction at the hospital is great - the normally confident Human Torch doesn't know what to say or do in this situation. Just a perfect bit of storytelling.

I was not reading Fantastic Four at this time actually, but I picked up this book because a friend of mine said it was a must read book. I had no idea who John Byrne was(this was long before I started caring about such things) but I was floored by the issue

I'd forgotten that The Beyonder was using a copy of Steve Rogers' body.
JB: Did you consciously draw The Beyonder that way? I figure the absence of blonde hair presented a challenge.

For me, this story ties in with JB´s second FF issue, the one spotlighting the Torch as he tries to clear the name of a former classmate. Hard to say which I like better. All I know is I care a lot more for the character after reading these tales.

This story was always my favorite issue of John's run on FF. Most human story I have ever read. Very moving and was the story that made the biggest impression on me. I thought of this issue all the time growing up and how sad it was....but that is what made it so wonderful. It really was a heartfelt story and by far your best in my opinion.
And let me add that as an 11 year old, I could appreciate the depth, workmanship and heart of the story just as I can a 33 year old. Find a story written today that can appeal to that wide of an age range....

This story and the Kid who collected Spider-Man were the 2 main stories I used to let potential Girlfriends read to introduce them to comics.
It usually always worked.
