So, this inker named Ray Kryssing is copying Bob Layton
commissions and selling them on ebay with no mention of them being
copies. Very strange to see a commission that is hanging on my wall for
sale for $25.
ink_spot_comic_art is the ebay seller.
jerk.
Plus, this guy has inked JB, is it only a matter of time before he copies JB
commissions with NO mention of the original artist?
jerk.
Wait a second, on his website, HE IS SELLING JB COPIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some "homages" mention the original artist. Some don't. The eBay
auctions don't, and that is why he's on my "jerk" list.

original artist...

Just took a look at the site. The X-Men stuff is clearly lifted directly from JB's run on the title. The guy probably just did light table tracings and then inked them. Hell, if that's all it takes, let me start a website and start selling what I've done for fun for years! Those aren't homages he's selling, they are blatant rip-offs IMO.

why do I get the feeling that I just set myself up for getting sucker punched
by this guy at a con...
Sorry, Ray. Nothing personal. Didn't mean to call you a jerk so many times.
You do nice recreations. You just need to make it more obvious what they
are, and maybe NOT copy commissions that individuals have paid alot for
the originals. It's unfair to the artist and the collector.
Please don't sucker punch me. I have a baby boy who needs his daddy...

'cause it's a good copy AND not everyone can afford the real thing.
I see no problem with this as long as the buyer knows it's a copy. When you think about it -- when you buy a comic book you're only buying a "copy" of the original art -- so what's the difference here?
It's a little cheesy to sell copies of someone else's commission piece, but we are talking about cartoons and comics here and Ray, like most artists, is just trying to make a living with the skills he has.
I don't know Ray, in fact I've never heard his name before. So I'm not sticking up for him - but I am sticking up for all the artists out there who struggle to make a living - but in the end they are trying to give something special to the masses --- ART. Not everyone can "ink" the correct way -- it's NOT just tracing a line.
If you don't like it don't buy it --- but a nice "original looking" copy of some page or panel you really enjoyed from a comic -- sometimes it looks great on a wall...
...but he is a jerk if he's not crediting the original artist.

I looked at some of the X-Men pictures and he is not crediting JB when it is obvious that it is JB's work.

I don't know, Steven - I get the idea that you can't afford it, but if it's not by JB, what's the point? Anyone can trace something. The point of buying original art is that you're getting a piece of art from the hand of the artist.
I would understand if this guy was selling these tracings like, 20 for a buck or something to cover the cost of postage - then I would understand buying some, for decorating a room or something - it would be like buying posters or cutting up your old comics and putting the scraps on the wall, but charging that much for a tracing of someone else's work?
I can't see buying that. If I want a JB piece on my wall, it's got to be by JB - not a tracing that set me back a c-note by some guy with a light box.

I just looked at the Cyclops vs. Wolverine piece on the site. The explanation includes a reference to the second X-Men movie coming out "soon."
