As I've mentioned in another thread, I'm looking at
another trip to Italy this coming summer. As part of our
trip, we're planning on staying at a bed and breakfast
just outside San Gimignano. However, according to the
proprietors, the best/easiest way to get there from the
airport in Florence is to rent a car, so as to have a car
to get around and see the Tuscan sights.

My question is this - how scary a drive is it from the
airport to San Gimignano? I'm mainly concerned with the
area immediately around the airport. Is this something
an out of towner (way WAY out of towner!) should
undertake? Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated!

Hey Trevor,
Fellow Canuck here (from Calgary). I have been living in Florence for the past 10 years and have done that drive several times. I too would recommend renting a car. Italian bad driving is somewhat of a myth. Sure, they are not as kind as us Canadians, but they are definitely not unsafe. I would suggest renting GPS too. From the airport you can navigate to San Gimignano without heading into Florence.
Don't hesitate to ask for more info/help if you need it (martinhoart@gmail.com).  When you arrive we can grab a pizza, some wine and a gelato.

Trevor,

Take Martinho up on his offer, he's a great host.  He knows some great places there in Florence.  I loved the pepperoni, onion and Gorgonzola pizza he turned us on to.  Yum!

Trevor, Martino, it would a pleasure to me meet you both!

And, Trevor, I haven't been in Florence in almost 15 years, but trust Martinho, in Tuscany drivers aren't crazy, you shouldn't have problems.

Francesco, Martinho, the e-mail is sent to the B&B to book
for the first three nights of August. Assuming they have a
room available for us, it's a go! The next eight months
are going to go verrrrry slowly, I think.

Francesco is close to Florence but has not been here in 15 years. Well, you know what the Florentines say: "Better one dead in your home than a Pisan at the door"
Maybe I will come see you Francesco!

Trevor,

If you come in July I will miss you. Always back in Cowtown at that time. Where in Canada are you?

I'm from Elba Island but I spend most of the month in Pisa.

Martinho, if you want to come in Pisa one of these days (before Christmas), I'd be glad to meet you. I should be there Wednesday.

Brad, am I wrong or did yiu come in Pisa last year? I think I noticed a thread here, but only days later, unfortunately.

Martinho,

If all goes as planned, we'll be arriving in Italy on
August 1, staying three nights just outside San Gimignano,
four nights in Florence, and four in Rome. Need more
time!!
